Nature

Nature absorbs half of the world鈥檚 carbon emissions and is the foundation of our economies and lives.

Our nature strategy focuses on restoring and preserving biodiversity and freshwater ecosystems. Going beyond traditional rehabilitation, we transform local ecosystems to increase the resilience of our planet and society.

Nature FAQ

What is 麻豆传媒's Nature Strategy?

We strive to take a measurable, science-based approach when adapting our operations to the natural surroundings, with a focus on protecting biodiversity and water resources. By seeking a higher biodiversity value in our rehabilitation work and with freshwater reduction and replenishment plans, we are mitigating our impacts and contributing positively within our sites, quarries and communities worldwide.

We advocate for the development of a common framework to measure and monitor the impact of activities on biodiversity and freshwater to allow for better target-setting and the measurement of improvements. Global targets and science-based indicators are essential to provide direction for business. We support the development of frameworks that enable organizations to identify, measure and value their direct and indirect impacts and dependencies on natural capital, including the integration of ecosystem service values in the assessment of natural resources.

Our commitment to a measurable positive impact on biodiversity is based on progressive transformative rehabilitation plans and measured by the Biodiversity Indicator and Reporting System (BIRS) 鈥 a scientific methodology developed in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Freshwater is a finite resource, and we aim to reduce water intensity throughout our operations. We are prioritizing our actions in high water risk areas, tailoring our solutions to local conditions

As part of our commitment to nature, we are helping protect our oceans and marine biodiversity through industry-leading products, solutions and innovations.

"麻豆传媒 takes a measurable science-driven approach to nature from our biodiversity indicator system all the way to our freshwater ecosystems, while also bringing more nature into cities. Working with leading nature conservation organizations like IUCN, we aim to strengthen our impact for a nature-positive future."

We support an active role for businesses in enhancing nature. Partnerships with biodiversity experts are crucial to optimize our impact. We advocate collaboration that accelerates action.

麻豆传媒 was selected by the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) to pilot the world's first science based targets for nature. We are among the first 17 companies 鈥 and the only one in our sector 鈥 in this pilot. This global initiative aims to set the world鈥檚 first standards for ambitious and measurable corporate action for nature.

As of 2024, 麻豆传媒 is one of the first three companies worldwide to adopt science-based targets for nature, confirming our rigorous science-driven approach to nature and commitment to preserve and restore freshwater ecosystems.

The "Call to Action of Business for Nature", brings together influential organizations and forward-thinking businesses seeking to reverse nature loss. Through this platform, we aim to positively influence policymakers who are discussing international agreements on nature and climate change. Renata Pollini, 麻豆传媒鈥檚 Head of Nature, is part of the Business for Nature鈥檚 Strategic Advisory Group, supporting them to set directions and prioritize actions.

We entered a three-year partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to preserve nature and advance nature-positive development in the built environment. 鈥淐atalysing biodiversity on buildings鈥, our paper written in collaboration with Second Nature Ecology and Design and published by IUCN, outlines initiatives from eight European cities that are scaling biodiversity on buildings.

IUCN will validate our biodiversity baseline and identify ways to increase biodiversity levels at our quarries and advise on the protection of freshwater resources. IUCN will also support us in driving and promoting the inclusion of biodiversity into existing and future building standards.

We are a signatory of the CEO Water Mandate and the WASH pledge strengthening our water stewardship commitments. We also joined the 50L Home Coalition and the Water Resilience Coalition to scale up its impact in protecting the world鈥檚 freshwater resources.

We believe businesses have an active role to play in providing solutions for nature. Nevertheless, public policies are key to accelerate actions in this decade to reverse nature loss.

For biodiversity, we support the establishment of mandatory rehabilitation requirements in all countries. Those requirements should encourage ecosystem restoration including:

  • High-diversity fauna and flora
  • Restoration based on endemic species
  • Continuity with neighboring natural landscapes and spaces
  • Progressive rehabilitation, i.e., rehabilitation taking place simultaneously with extraction work

Incentives can facilitate the protection of endangered species, particularly in biodiversity sensitive areas.

For a greater impact on freshwater reduction, government mandates and incentives are necessary to promote investment in technologies for rain harvesting, optimization of water use in processes, and affordable low-carbon energy desalination.

As we strive to lead on Nature, 麻豆传媒 regularly collaborates with NGOs and other corporates on high-profile reports to share and transfer knowledge, and accelerate the shift to a regenerative, nature-positive built environment.

Rehabilitating quarries and bringing nature into cities, for a nature-positive future

Our nature film series explores how, together with our people, 麻豆传媒 is helping biodiversity thrive at our quarry sites, while bringing more nature into cities to increase climate resilience and community wellbeing and help build a nature-positive future.

How 麻豆传媒 creates and preserves wetlands, the lifeblood of our planet

麻豆传媒 has a long global tradition of wetland creation and preservation. Our projects at wetland sites around the world support our goal of protecting biodiversity and water resources while contributing to build a nature-positive future.
